Course Overview

In learning to sing Indian music, you are trained through the classical repertoire as well as through light classical, devotional, folk and film genres of North Indian music. Besides being an enjoyable pursuit, the many benefits of singing e.g. health, well-being, cognitive skills etc. are well documented.

Beginner

  • Basic training exercises
  • Rhythmic patterns
  • Simple pieces incl. kayadas, moharas and mukhras
  • Basic theme and variation pieces
  • Improvising paltas and tihais
  • Basic time keeping Taals

Intermediate

  • How to develop technique and fluency
  • Compositions including Tukras, Gats and Relas
  • Simple improvisation
  • Introduction to notation
  • Learning how to tune the sitar
  • Playing with Lehara and Tabla accompaniment
  • Performing in public

Advanced

  • Compositions clung Uthan, Bant, Peshkar
  • Performing in variety of Talas
  • Sophisticated Improvisation techniques
  • Accompanying skills

Students need to have a note book to notate pieces and make notes on theory, and a folder to keep handouts in.

You will be given an instrument to learn on initially but you will have to provide your own instrument so that you can practise at home.
